At 23, Colbie Caillat is following a new path to music stardom via the Internet. Her song, “Bubbly,” on her MySpace site, received more than 40 million hits and reigned supreme for four months before she signed with a major record label, Universal Republic.
The blond, blue-eyed daughter of Ken Caillat, a record producer who worked with Fleetwood Mac on their Rumours and Tusk albums, Caillat grew up in Malibu, Calif., loving music, but didn’t start playing the guitar and writing songs until her late teens.
Caillat recently released her debut album, Coco, and is opening for John Mayer on Monday at the Molson Amphitheatre.

Colbie Caillat draws opening slot for John Mayer

Colbie Caillat, who’s opening for John Mayer at Summerfest’s Marcus Amphitheater Wednesday night, has a gig many aspiring performers would envy, and it’s all thanks to an Internet profile.
Like thousands of performers, Caillat - her name rhymes with ballet - created a MySpace page three years ago to showcase her music. At the time, she didn’t really know what the Web site was.
“My friend was like, ‘All right, there’s this thing called MySpace Music and you can hear other people’s songs.’ So he made me the page and helped me upload my music,” said Caillat, 23. “I had no idea what it could do.”
What the social networking site did was give her sweet acoustic pop music a chance to stand out. Within months, the Los Angeles native earned thousands of fans, a mention in Rolling Stone and the title of MySpace’s top unsigned artist. The buzz led to a recording contract with Universal Republic and a debut album, “Coco.”

It’s an old news guys,but it’s cool

Check out Colbie open up in her new ‘First Ladies’ MTV interview all about her “firsts” including her first crush, first song she ever wrote, first fan letter and even gives us a first listen of her beautiful rendition of “Killing Me Softly.”
When Colbie Caillat is asked to name some of the more unusual places she’s heard her song “Bubbly” blasting from speakers, she smiles, then says shyly: “I haven’t heard it that many times.”
She’s in the minority. The dreamy acoustic guitar groove that started off as a sleeper hit was a radio fixture, and her latest single, “Realize,” sits at No. 20 after three months on the charts.
Months after a friend started a page for Caillat on MySpace, she had more than 100,000 friends on the networking site - and the ear of labels. By the time her debut album, “Coco,” was released, buzz was already strong.
Caillat, 22, plays the Madison Theater in Covington on Monday.
Question: Before you got your page on MySpace, were you sending your music to labels?
Answer: I never sent anything to the record labels. I had just started songwriting and performing, so I would write new songs every month with my friend, Jason Reeves, and each time we’d get a new song, we’d go in the studio and record it, so we never finished a demo CD. I would update my site with all my songs, the new ones that we wrote, and I would ask my fans their opinion on the songs, if they liked it or not.
Q: Did you ever get negative criticism?
A: I encouraged that - I was like, ‘OK, tell me if it’s good or if it’s bad, or what you don’t like about it,’ and everyone would. They ranked my songs - like what ones they liked the most, and what ones they would want played at their wedding … That’s what made my decision on what songs to put on the album.

Young singer will perform tonight at the West Bank Stage
We recently interviewed singer Colbie Caillat in her dressing room after a performance on the TV show “The View.”
Here’s what the young singer, who will perform tonight at the Wichita River Festival, had to say about crushes, nicknames and battling your fears.
Did you write the song “Bubbly” for anyone special?
No. I didn’t write “Bubbly” for any guy. I wrote it about the feelings you get when you have a crush on somebody, and when they give you butterflies in your stomach and they just make you smile.
Tell us about your music video for “Bubbly.”
It was shot in my hometown of Malibu and in Santa Barbara in southern California. It was just about being by the beach and having a wonderful day with a person you like. It captures that whole feeling.

This isn’t so new, but it’s very cute! Check it out!
Colbie Caillat (rhymes with “valet”) is from California. But sometimes when she encounters fans of the laid-back, R&B-tinged pop of her 2007 debut album “Coco” they believe her hometown is MySpace. The 22-year-old singer-songwriter caused such a stir on the social networking site with her songs - uploaded by her friend Dom - that she went from bedroom composer to major-label artist within a year. Since then she’s toured with the Goo Goo Dolls and cruised with John Mayer, for whom she’ll open this summer. The root of all this good fortune is Caillat’s sexy, playful, and inescapable hit song “Bubbly,” which describes the toes-to-nose giddiness brought on by the first rush of love. (Or maybe something else.)
